Mr. Havican was born in a blue and white tiled maternity room at the Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas on February 18, 1957. This is his earliest memory. After his birth, his early years are somewhat fuzzy until his 8th Christmas, when his parents gave him a Polaroid Swinger camera, along with several packs of film. Life was never the same for him after that day.
After spending his formative years stalking the dog and cat and his mother’s ever-changing hairdo’s for photographic material, Mr. Havican finally graduated high school and began life on his own. These years were spent photographing plants, primitive landscapes and a motley group of friends.
One day, he ran into the publisher of This Week in Texas magazine at a community event and was asked if the magazine could buy some of his photos of the event because their regular photographer hadn’t shown up. Mr. Havican spent the next 5 years as the magazine’s head Houston photographer covering everything from sports and celebrities to drag pageants.
Shortly before moving to Austin in 1981, he sold several of his photographs of male models to Drummer magazine and Manifest magazine, both published out of California and distributed nationwide. The publication of his work in Drummer and Manifest launched the “porn” phase of his career. A phase in which, over 20 years later, he is still quite active.
In recent years, Mr. Havican has spent his time attending school and traveling around the state on his motorcycle photographing Texas’ historical sites.
In a previous life, he worked in a variety of fields, including paperboy, fast food, the shipping industry, retail sales and management, legal secretary, office management, assistant corporate secretary, erotic photographer, and full-time student. Currently he works in the insurance industry.
Mr. Havican is an avid motorcyclist and love doing all his own maintenance on my bikes. You can see photos of his current and some of his previous bikes by going to the Gallery.
Mr. Havican currently resides outside Rosanky, TX with his spouse Roy, a two indoor cats and 3 outdoor feral cats on a large parcel of land, thereby getting away from the rest of humanity.
